The rimless, tapered bottleneck case of 5.56×45 NATO ammunition is 44.70mm (1.76 inches) long, with a diameter that varies from 6.43mm at the neck to 9.58mm at the base. The boat-tailed bullet inside this casing has a diameter of 5.70mm or 224 inches. The length of the 5.56 cartridge, loaded with both bullet and shell, is 57.40mm (2.26 inches).
